For Benedict's birthday. we had Harry Potter tea with R & J. While I was looking for examples of food from the books, I read a lot of articles talking about lack of veg. Yes, it doesn't feature a lot - I'm sure it's offered, but not talked about, given the sort of meals they have, I imagine cabbage, carrots, broccoli, maybe cauliflower cheese occasionally... meat and two veg. Also, a lot of people complain that there's no fresh fruit at breakfast. Which made me wonder, who eats fruit for breakfast? I'm vaguely aware that some people have grapefruit, and then there are babies of course, but is it more widespread than that?

(Yesterday Judith ate her own bowl of cereal, half of my bowl of cereal and a pear. I had half a bowl of cereal.)

I'm aware that fresh fruit is a great idea for breakfast in theory, but fruit + milk in the mornings doesn't agree with me.

Is it though? My reaction is to assume that fortified cereal for breakfast, followed by fruit at snack time is better, because otherwise when it comes to snack time I'll eat crisps or cake or biscuits, all of which don't seem as good as fruit. I guess it depends on how many snacks you eat, too.

I have the fruit at snack time, apple, plums or banana, but banana goes on cereal. Weetabix with banana. I was given that as a child and gave it to my kids.

Frequently half a grapefruit, often sliced banana on cornflakes.

Speaking as someone who was at boarding school in the 1990s, breakfast involved a cooked component (bacon and eggs, kippers, sausage, that sort of thing [but not all of them at once]), cereal and as much toast as you could stuff down. But no fruit.

That would have been more as I expect, thankyou.

my boarding school in the 1980s, we had cereal and toast. I think there was coffee and tea, but I'm not sure.

I have almost exactly the same breakfast whenever I can.

If I feel up to it/particularly like spending the money/think the fruit will be any good/there's some in the garden, I'll get fresh peach/mango/strawberry/apricot/raspberry/blueberry instead of tinned peach. Today was a tinned peach day, though.

I read the slashes in this comment as line breaks, as if it was a sequel to "This is just to say".

In summer I have oatiflakes with yogurt and some sort of berry most days. I've tried it with apple but that's not so good.

I don't tend to have breakfast on weekdays, but I make sure I have OTT breakfast/brunch at the weekend.

It would appear, if one is having an eggs/pancake.waffles/sausages/bacon sort of breakfast pretty much anywhere in Canada I have been, there will be a pile of fruit with it by default.Which as I basically don't eat fruit can be a bit of a waste; one more good reason to have sushi for breakfast instead, if one needed one.

Fair enough. Maybe it's a left-pondia thing? Except that this poll seems to suggest I'm just limited in my imagination.

My default breakfast at home is porridge oats with sultanas & milk, microwaved in the bowl, with a glass of orange juice diluted with water. Technically that's 2 of my 5-a-day but neither of them are fresh fruit. I might sometimes substitute a sliced banana for sultanas, but this is rare.

We're on holiday, so I'm going with what's in the cupboard (i.e. cornflakes).

A full English would have at least two, too, depending on whether mushrooms count, so I don't think that was the objection. I think it was more related to fat levels, but I was too busy boggling.

It occurs to me that in other countries I would have fruit - for example, in Spain I ate lots of watermelon, kiwi and pineapple at breakfast, with bread and meat and cheese, and that;s pretty much what I'd expect to eat anywhere on mainland Europe with the exception of France, where I have always eaten some sortof baked good (croissant or pain au raisin or similar), yoghurt and apple puree. With variations on the type of cheese/amount of fish/proportions of meat to cheese/types of fruit. Whether I'm right to expect that or not is another question.

I find breakfast very boring and can rarely be bothered with it. I sometimes make porridge, and might eat a banana, but at weekends I tend to go for something random. A few weeks ago I woke up craving pasta, and ended up making myself a bowl of pasta, veg and cheese at 11am. Yum. Cold boiled potatoes and leftover salmon sounds like a brilliant breakfast to me...

My body usually can't cope with fruit so early, though my current cereal has raisins in and I sometimes treat myself to yoghurt with fruit in. On weekdays I have a banana for elevenses, and on weekends I have a banana for breakfast (because I'm lazy and keep some in the bedside table) or porridge with raisins. If I'm in a hotel I might be more leisurely and have whatever fruit platter is going. I usually save my fruit juice allowance for the evening/pub.

I eat breakfast every day except Sundays. Mondays to Fridays, I always eat the same thing, and it always includes a banana. On Saturday I have a cooked breakfast which does not normally include fruit, although it does include orange juice, tomatoes and mushrooms. I'm thinking of introducing a pink grapefruit into breakfast on Saturday.

I never eat fruit for breakfast, but I always have (grape)fruit juice. I'm not sure if this counts :) I can manage to drink something, but I wouldn't want to work my way through a whole grapefruit quite early in the morning.

I'm confusing.

I don't really eat "breakfast" but I've taken to having some dried fruit with my morning coffee at work, so maybe that counts.

If I stay in a hotel that provides breakfast I will generally eat it. I would expect hotels places to provide fresh fruit salad as part of a breakfast buffet, but not generally expect B&Bs to offer anything more interesting than an apple or orange. I would also expect fresh fruit juice (apple, orange and possibly more interesting options) to be available as well as tea and coffee.

I will also eat cooked breakfast food, kippers and porridge (salty!) depending on what is available but I wouldn't want to do so every day, it's a bit too much food for my preferences. I don't eat cereal-with-milk, I find the texture thoroughly disgusting and certainly can't cope with it first thing in the morning. I don't tend to eat "continental" breakfast foods (cheese, cold meats) as they aren't much to my taste, pastry things (coissant, pain au chocolat, etc) are nice. Oh, and toast, there should be toast, and jam to go with.

I figure the food in HP was meat-with-veg. It irritates me slightly that there aren't any v*gan kids at Hogwarts although I assume the House Elves would make them food they can eat.

Hmm. Does meat count as non-vegan if it's been magicked out of nowhere and no actual slaying of beasts was involved?

I don't generally have fruit fruit for breakfast but will usually have orange juice - vitamin C is very good for waking up.

I usually have fruit juice, and occasionally the other half of [livejournal.com profile] djm4's grapefruit (mostly only on non-work days). I don't normally seek out fruit (other than in juice form) at breakfast, but I will eat it quite happily if it is presented to me.

Huh. I almost always have fruit for breakfast--usually a banana or berries (fresh or frozen, depending on the season) on cereal. If I'm lazy, it's banana and toast or a granola bar. Even if I do eggs or something, I'm still likely to have some fruit...
