[Ex. 2:6]And when she had opened [it], she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This [is one] of the Hebrews' children.

So compassion grows in the unlikeliest of places... and so Atenism is founded, and Moses grows to deliver the Jews, and a whole new religious era is born, all founded in the crying of an abandoned baby, and the open heart of a lonely girl.

[Gen 45:5]Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.

Ah, Joseph. Such an unlikely hero, a dreamer, a boastful favourite, sold as a slave. Yet dreaming isn't all he does, and somehow, he comes out of there to help the whole civilised world build a future. There's hope for us all.

[Gen 28:15]And, behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done [that] which I have spoken to thee of.

I dream, too, of angels. I dream of a better time, a better land. It will not happen without we work for it.

[Gen 22:7]And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here [am] I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where [is] the lamb for a burnt offering?

Being a parent is scary. You have to trust your child, to be willing to give them up. Love, yes, discipline, yes, but also a willingness to give up. You don't own your child - and they will follow their path. So, to be a good parent, I think, is to equip them for whatever path they choose, and to stand back, when the time comes. At first glance, Abraham seems like rather a callous father; and yet, Isaac doesn't seem to blame him. Only they know, I feel; only they understand their relationship. It's a difficult passage.

[Gen 12: 2-3]And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

In Abraham and his descendents, we see all of family life... all of life. O Lord, we are very very grateful, for what you have done for us. We have a place, a sense of continuity and many, many blessings. Of course, their infertility holds a particular poignancy for us at this time, but their blessing brings hope, as to so many. Abraham's blessing is our blessing.

[Gen 6:18] But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

It's interesting, perhaps, that for some the rainbow is a religious image and for others it evokes gayness. Personally, I just think 'ooh, pretty, a rainbow'. Thinking of salvation through protecting the earth, of keeping covenant, faithfully. No, I don't keep Leviticus. But I do try to add to beauty, to share beauty. I try.

Gen [1:7] Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

It's about temptation. We all know that. I also think, however, that it's about how easy it is to do someting without thinking of the consequences; of throwing that bottle into landfill rather than recycling. Maybe it's time to stop, and think about how we can help.

[Gen 2:9] Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.

There's a place in Cambridge which I love; just a spot in the middle of the estate where I live, where the trees shelter it from the worst ravages of winter, and a cool breeze always blows in summer. Those trees are peaceful and it never fails to bring a smile to my lips.

That's what I think of when I think of trees.

[Gen 1:31] And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

And it is very good, all the beauty of the earth and the heavens. Today a light rain is falling.

The mystery of creation is great; I love the whole stuff about cosmic radiation which seems to prove the Big Bang theory. It's all around us, the beauty of God;s creation. Ask a physicist for more details, I'll just stand and gawp.
