Yesterday we went to B's choice of film, Game Plan.

It was actually rather good, and I came away with a smile on my face. Not high art, but still worth seeing - I'm glad he talked me into it.

I'm also thinking that Dwayne Johnson and Madison Pettis make a rather good father/daughter team, and am thinking maybe they'll be cast in Friday Night Knitting Club. I got Julia Roberts right after all. (I'd still cast J. August Richards myself, which is one of many reasons why I don't direct romcom.)

What an utterly depressing film. I cried the whole way through.

I did finish the second sleeve of Benedict's jumper, though; nearly finished now.

Also, it's *good*, just miserable and hopeless.

Saw P.S. I Love You the other day; don't bother if you've read the book, but Colin liked it, so you might be alright if you haven't. There's a film of If You Could See Me Now in the works too... I bet it's going to have Whoopi Goldberg in. In fact, the only thing worse than having Whoopi Goldberg in would be not having Whoopi Goldberg in, and I notice the plot summary on IMDb, one line long, already differs from the novel... I doubt we'll see it on my week.

It's very rare that I read a book and think 'that would make a great movie', but I did it recently with Friday Night Knitting Club. Happily, a brief IMDb excurision indicates a US release date of 6th June. My instinct that the main character was 'utterly Julia Roberts' turned out to be correct, now I'm just hoping for J August Richards as the romantic lead, but I bet they'll go with someone older. Also, they won't change the location, because it's already set in New York (rather than Dublin).

Finally, just two quotes left to guess, one from last year, one from 1995.

2. When you're born in the gutter, you end up in the port.

11. See, ya are what ya are in this world. That's either one of two things: Either you're somebody, or you ain't nobody.

Go borrow these films from someone, people!

I can't get any of Sarah's, but here's mine:

Meme rules:
1. Pick 15 of your favourite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Fill in the film title once it's guessed.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions. Totally cheating, you dirty cheaters.

It's really difficult thinking of 15 films. So they're maybe not all big 'you must see this' movies, but they're all films I love to watch or rewatch, or that have made an impression.

We watched Evening last night. Very beautiful, very emotionally draining. It's about memory and mistakes, and love. It's a brilliant film, but not easy.

Similarly, I am currently reading The Fionavar Tapestry series by Guy Gavriel Kay. I am moved to wonder whether atheists have the same reaction to Kay that I have to Egan - obviously the books are very good, but it's hard to read more than one at a time because of the relentless religion (in Kay's case, Christianity; in Egan's case, evangelical atheism). In any case, the starkness of the spirituality is something which I find difficult, again, very beautiful, very draining.

This film is visually stunning. It's a rich tapestry, filled with interesting shapes and colours. It's pretty, it's well directed. It makes no sense whatsoever. I got the feeling that I'd have understood it if I knew more about Chinese history, though. It's more serious than Hero, though, and the ninjas got visible ropes (and grappling irons). Stay at home and watch Hero, you'll get more out of it, or expect eyecandy and weirdness.

Other things today: I sang the gospel acclamation at church, we ate mexican yum, I did bowling for the first time ever and almost beat Colin at air hockey. Also, there was much playing of PS2 Lego Starwars, as I bought it for Benedict and he wanted me to find out how it works. It's so cute! Star Wars should have been a lego-based computer game from the get go.

I love a bit of politics, me, and this was political drama where the good guys win.

I don't know whether it would still be enjoyable or worth watching if that's not your thing, but I'm glad we went.

Acting was good, direction was good, I loved the way they skipped the boring bits and messed about with the timeline to make the story work (as in jumping from time to time, rather than moving history).

A very uplifting film.

I do wish that British film makers were less band-wagon jumpers, though. Remember when I got sick of swirly camera work (the sort in Calendar Girls)? Well, now I;m bored of explanatory 'what comes next' text at the end. Get your own gimmick!

Bah.

Colin and I have decided we want to see more films at the cinema. We tend to subsist on a diet of romcom, which is not necessariyl good for us. Anyway, having recently made this decision, I noticed, as I often do when I go nto the cinema, several films which I really want to see. It's not my turn to choose this week, it's Colin's; we went to Outlaw last week as my choice. However, one of the films which I really want to see is Amazing Grace. Which google tells me is not being shown in Cambridge at all. I guess I'm waiting for DVD then.

We went to see Outlaw last night, because it reminded me of a book I read once and really liked.

Near the beginning was an iteration of a nightmare of mine... and I felt sick. The dodgy camera work did nothing to dispel that. Do not see this film if you suffer from motion sickness - the cameraman hasn't heard of a tripod.

I'm not sure I was the target audience - I failed really to sympathise with any of the main characters - and thus perhaps it didn't work for me as it should have. However, I did think it was a good film, if somewhat uncomfortable, spoilt only by the aforementioned camerawork. Shot selection was good - direction was good - acting was good - pace was good, with a range of action continuing throughout - but let down by one bad aspect.
