I want to make a cardi for a costume, Sarah Zellaby from Seanan McGuire's Incryptid (my first, so I'm a bit dithery). I checked with McGuire when she had an Ask Me Anything, and she approved the pattern. In Midnight Blue Line Special, Sarah wears a green skirt, similar to one I already have, and a brown cardigan, similar to Froufrou from the Happy Hooker. Here's the exchange:

Now, I'm looking at yarn choices, and I think my best choices are either Vanna's Choice, which is the practical choice and comes in the colour I was initially thinking of, or http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/yarn.php?id=104 Drops Alpaca Silk which is 77% alpaca, 23% silk and on sale. The only downside is, it doesn't really have a brown.

Which would you go for? I'm leaning Alpaca Silk, either beige as close enough or violet as similar to the author-approved photo.

Oh, cool, that sounds awesome. I have no useful advice about the costume, but you're making me want to read Incrypted :)

Because you like books where people wear cardigans? In that case, you'll love Shambling Guide to New York by Mur Lafferty. IIRC, the protagonist wears two different cardigans! Or because McGuire answered my question? Because she responded to a LJ comment I left her too, I am becoming quite insufferable.

(Ps. I did like the Lafferty, and think you probably will too because I can't imagine why you wouldn't, it's got zombies and everything and she describes herself as 'such a Douglas Adams fangirl.)

LOL, I'm not sure exactly, I'm not sure it was entirely logical. I guess, the fact that Seanan thinks you would make a good Sarah Zellaby makes me well disposed to her and the book, and also makes me think that I'd like the character, and by extension the book :)

(I tried the first two Toby Daye books and the first two Newsflesh books, and loved the characters and the setting, but was unreasonably annoyed by the plot, so I'm teetering back and forth on whether I wanted to read more or not, so some nice second degree connection, even a minor one, makes me more positively inclined :))

Ah, fair enough. I think she doesn't know me well enough to know if the character is me, though. The first is clear Buffy fan fic, the main character even wears sushi pyjamas.

Yeah, it was more of an emotional reaction than a logical one -- I liked the idea, even if I don't know if it's true.

LOL @ sushi pajamas. That also makes me favourably inclined :)

:) and if you don't like it it's not a major investment.
