I don't wear earrings very often, and most of the time they're studs. I have one pair of dangly ones on hooks, and find it far harder to curve the hook into my ear than to put a straight butterfly post in. This is probably because I need more practise though!
That's what I thought. I'll think about studs next time I start having ideas, I think. At the moment, my head is actually more full of bracelets and little of pendants than earrings, but I just wanted to check.
Oh, and my real answer to the last question is "velvet" - I don't mind if it's a box with a bit of velvet in the bottom, or a little velvet bag, I like my jewelry in something stroky and expensive looking :-)
I prefer the butterfly type as well, regardless of the style of earring. The kind with hooks get lost so easily that I don't consider them worth buying.
I prefer hooks in surgical steel. I'd rather have solid silver than plated though - plate's more likely to flake. Basically the important thing is being as unreactive as possible so as not to irritate the ear.
Just to confirm what LNR said - gold is much better than silver (which is in turn much better than base metals) on the allergies front. And lots of people are allergic/find their ears react badly to stuff these days, so it probably would be worth your thinking about. So really my vote would be for gold wires. I only wear gold earrings for any significant length of time (eg my sleepers/studs), or silver for say one day. I might wear something else for say just an evening, but only very occasionally, and it's probably an unwise risk. I haven't tried either surgical steel or titanium, though, which might be fine.
Ear wires are pretty cheap, solid silver or no. Are you only finding a price that seems too high? What sort of price are you selling your earrings for?
Also, I don't really want to get hung up about earrings at the moment. I'm still at the stage of making lots of things, and then marketing them.If it fails, it doesnt matter too much - I'm not looking at living on this, just as a sideline, and I'll have lots of presents for family/friends :)
If I'm buying for myself, I don't care much what the packaging looks like - but I'm gift giving, I do. I think it's really cool that you're doing this. I'd love ot be a bit more artistically inclined.
Actually, either spelling is fine, but jewellery is the one more commonly used in the UK. In fact, my Oxford dictionary stats (US: also jewelry) so I'd be very hesitant before using that spelling.
I voted for sterling silver because I have allergies. I've been told that the allergy is actually to nickel, but I don't know if that's true, so I still tend to say 'non-precious metals'. Anyway, I find that surgical steel is fine too.
