Three candidates, STV, one position. Quite a serious vote, so naturally I sha'n;t actually do it based on a LJ poll. I'm just curious.

But what you should really do is come with me to the hustings on the 15th, and not make your mind up until after you've met them all

Yes - I answered based on my current inclination, but [livejournal.com profile] djm4 and I are planning to go to the London hustings before we make up our minds.

That would be a fantastic idea if they'd ever sent me a membership card and thus I knew my membership number.

Presumably, it's one of the random numbers on the letter that came with the ballot paper, but which one?

If you look on the letter from Lord Rennard, just above your address there's a line of numbers - your membership number is the (probably) seven digit one in the middle. It's repeated on the Leadership Election Appeal slip on the back of the letter.

Where will the hustings be, although I'll be away then.

I base my advice soley on the recommendations of people I think know better than me, as I haven't looked into the issue deeply, never having got around to joining a mainstream political party.

Speaking as someone who's not a party member but did vote for the LibDems at the last general election, Simon Hughes is the person least likely to make me defect. I wish there were a stronger candidate, though.

Single Transferable Vote

It's the one where you rank your choices, and if your first choice gets least votes, then your second choice gets taken into account.

Of course it's really Alternative Vote rather than STV given you can't really have any proportionality when you're only filling a single position.

I'll refrain from filling in the poll (much as I'd like to) as I don't really think it'd be appropriate for me to suggest anything.

Ah yes, I always get the two confused.

I got my ballot paper too. I think they are all strong candidates and will be good in the cabinet whether leader or not, but I liked that Simon Hughes says he wants to win next time, not just be opposition. And I didn't like the reactions to his being bi, so he gets my first vote.

<nod> It did seem a bit. odd, all the 'he lied! He said two not inconsistant things!' fuss.
