More on Benedict's tie

It seems that Jon and I both us a four-in-hand knot, and I was just paranoid about the length of his tie - also, it might be slightly too long for him, as it's meant to do the whole school and children grow considerably between the ages of 4 and 11.

Anyway, we're teaching him, and today he tied his own tie! He did on Friday, too, but there was Mass then, which means there are visitors and they have to look smart, so I retied it for him. Today it looks spectarcularly weird (I didn't even remind him what to do verbally) but he tied it himself, and he's really pleased.

I'm impressed. I don't know how long it normally takes for people to learn that, but it sounds very fast.

Now is probably a good time to teach him how to tie a bow tie, as this is really hard to learn later in life (says the man who had to get a porter to tie his for the MA ceremony) :)

I hated having to wear a tie for school, but now I don't mind wearing one for a hobby group; odd or what? Learning both the bowtie and straight tie is good, as is learning many methods for the straight tie to accommodate different tie lengths and body sizes; because I'm 5'7" with a small (14" max) collar wearing a man's tie, I need the Windsor knot to eat up the surplus length. Having said that, Windsor and half-Windsor can both wait until he's mastered the four-in-hand.
