Because you should have the self-respect to be able to walk away if you have to, even if you never find that you need to do so, and you should respect them enough to let them walk away should they need to do so.
At least, that's the one that always makes me cry.
Anything by the Magnetic Fields is also good. Grand Canyon is particularly lovely:
If I was the Grand Canyon I'd echo everything you'd say But I'm just me, I'm only me and you used to love me that way
as is All My Little Words:
You are a splendid butterfly it is your wings that make you beautiful and I could make you fly away but I could never make you stay Not for all the tea in China not if I could sing like a bird not for all North Carolina not for all my little words.
*Nods* Lots of my fave songs are unhappy love songs, and very few are happy ones. I guess maybe it just makes for more interesting lyrics or something.
And I'm not even a goth ;-). That song was what made me ask my dad to get me Annie Lennox tapes when he came home (from abroad) and so he got me some Eurythmics tapes, which got me into them. (and within a year or two have every Eurythmics album!)
Can I have a vote for Some Kind of Stranger in a "You know, I'm kind of fed up of shallow emotions-lite songs about how relationships are meant to work" way ?
Some Kind of Stranger is really an anti-love song, though.
OK, I think I'll go for Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, because I do think trust and openness to learning new things are love-related virtues that do not get enough decent songs written about them. [ Though mind you, since hearing the Masters of Chaant version of it used in Coriolanus I'm much more inclined to hear it as a political anthem. ]

Hey, you didn't ask for happy love songs, right?
