Gertie from Gertie's blog for better sewing is doing a sew along of a wrap top. It looks to be a fairly easy sew, and it's a pattern I've been considering for some brown & gold stretch velvet I have, so I'm considering joining in.

Since my sewing maching (beginner machine, get you over the hump of being scared of sewing machines) broke, I've not done any sewing, and I've some material promised to be made into a top for A and a dress for J, so perhaps I should really do that and not start a new thing, but I'm thinking 'do it when other people on the internet are doing it' might be a good choice.

So; any of you interested in joining me? Do you think it's a good plan? Ceb, can I bring sewing (or crochet) to your Yuletide party and pretend I'm totally writing?

I hated needlework at school. My mum didn't do dressmaking like other mums so I had no backup at home, but when my kids were small I got a second hand manual sewing machine, turn the handle, and made simple dresses for them and me. They looked home-made but I was proud of them :).Also curtains and table cloths.

We had a sewing machine we could use in my hall of residence at university the years I was in hall. And my best friend was experienced at dress-making. I made a ball gown for a union ball, with a cheap piece of material from the market. And then later when a mum another best friend was experienced at dress-making and helped me cut things out.

I hated needlework at school too. I kept being told off for being better with hand sewing than a machine, but hten not really getting help for improving my machine sewing :(

But there are a lot of things I couldn't do as a teenager that I've tried as an adult to see if I can do them and whether they make me happy. Mostly they don't, but sewing is the exception - Colin bought me a starter machine last year which got me over the hump, and I learnt how to use a machine without being scared, but the motor burnt out or similar so I'm without at the moment. It was cheaper and more convenient than a set of lessons though, so I'm looking at it that way and saving up for a better, more long lasting one.

When I did it at school the machine used to hate me. It came unthreaded at once as soon as I sat down and I never learned how to thread it. The electric ones ran away with me too. But turn the handle was simple and I worked out threading. I actually don't much like hand sewing but like seeing things I've made. or did. And it was so cheap to make things for me and the daughters. I made jeans once! cut round a pair, laid out flat, leaving extra material for seams, and it worked. And skirts for small girls were easy. I made two party dresses, with help cutting out from a pattern. Must have a photo somewhere...
I don't know how to put it here. I will put it on facebook :).
