This is a thing of joy and great wonder. Apparently, I've been spinning worsted style (I think that's what the lady who showed me how said) which Knittyspin says is the right way to spin bamboo, so hurray, because I love bamboo yarn. I'm very pleased with my yarn so far, but it's not very even and I'm sure I'll improve with practise.

Other things I have found time to do yesterday include lunch with Alex (Yippees, very tasty) and tea with [livejournal.com profile] ceb. So, all good.

Finally, yesterday's Handy Manny featured the phrase "What we need is a numismatist" which seems most unlikely, but TV aimed at preschoolers tends towards the fantastical.

Everyone needs a numismatist from time to time. They're lovely people.

Normally in Handy Manny, they go to Kelly at the hardware store and she has anything they need. This time, it turned out that Manny's grandfather was a coin collector, and knew enough to send them in the right direction.

Sadly, your handy local looks-almost-like-a-numismatist-if-you-squint-a-bit has vanished to the Other Place... You could have checked it out with him ;)

Colin did indeed point out that I had used the phrase before. He's not a numismatist anymore, though.

I've done a bit of spinning myself, are you just using a drop spindle, or a spinning wheel? I found it pretty hard to get a good degree of consistency with a drop spindle, found it easier with a wheel, though I've heard that if you can get it with a drop spindle, it goes easier with the wheel too, though I've only had experience spinning wool rather than bamboo.

A drop spindle. We don't have room for a wheel at the moment. So far, I've only done wool, (merino apparently) because that's what came with the spindle (I bought a beginners kit). I'm crocheting with bamboo though, and I do like bamboo (and silk) to knit with so I'll have a go at spinning both of those,

When I was at a spinning/wool convention thingy (it wasn't big) there were a number of wheels that were built vertically that were pretty compact - let me see if I can find a link...

Is one from louet. I've seen ones that have multiple wheel sizes on one mount so you can move the band for different spinning speeds. It's vital you get the right spinning speed for the material you are spinning otherwise it's disastrous.

John is quite fond of the bit in Peppa Pig where Daddy finds a library book that is well overdue. It is called 'The Story oc Concrete' and begins 'Concrete is a mixture of sand, water and chemical admixtures', or something like, and instantly sends people to sleep.

That sounds like a good story. I could do with one or two like that.
