Judith has been sying 'ngry' (hungry or thirsty) and 'sblas sblas' (splash splash) already, but there's never been a moment shen she's obviously said it for the first time, more that they've become things in her speech that we understand.

Well, today she pointed at the fruit bowl and said 'bear'! (She meant pear, I don't keep bears in my fruit bowl.) First time she's tried to use my languae anddefinitely succeeded.

Yay! I love watching/hearing language develop like this, it's fascinating.

(I remember being quite puzzled by the apparent presence of a duck on the toothpaste until we realised 'dock!' meant clock and duck. Bears in the fruit bowl reminded me.)

What a very useful word. Benedct had one word which covered all diggers, tractors, etc: dot-dot. We used it for years after he was using proper English, mostly because we didn't know another word that meant the same thing.

I had a word which meant "vehicle with siren". The nice lady from the county council who comes round and shows you vocabulary cards got rather confused by it.

In our house, we call those "ni-nas." That covers all of those vehicles with sirens!

Aha! My word was da-das. But the sirens where you are are the wailing kind, aren't they?

Ooh, that works. I think most children call them nee-naws, so maybe that's why she was confused?

Aaah, yes. I've completely forgotten our children's first words, even though they had been very late in coming. I do remember a stage when Sam pointed out every aeroplane he saw whenever we were out, and another when Hannah pointed out daffodils. 'Daffodil' came quite early for her, but then became forgotten as she learnt 'flower'. Sam's first two-word sentence was quite exciting (excitement-making), but I forget what it was. Ho hum.

Benedict had 'ae-ay' and 'b-p' before words (aeroplane and biplane)
