I decided it was time to get over my fear of waste yarn (specifically, of knitting things with waste yarn to be unpicked and knit from later). Therefore, (well, it was the other way round really - I wanted to knit the pattern and decided I wasn't going to let nerves top me) I cast on for Fetching yesterday on the way to Ilford. I've just cast off now, and I'm not sure why I was so nervous! Well, I thought I wouldn't be able to unpick effectively - but it turned out to be easy! I've only done the left glove atm, in Shetland wool, black with flecks of colour. The stitch pattern doesn't really stand out, but the effect is elegant and understated rather than pointless (I think). They're for an alt.gothic.fashion swap.

Next, I'm going to make them in cerise mohair for me; I like bright pink fingerless gloves :)

I have some pink Sirdar Snowflake falls... Raspberry Ripple colour. I don't wear them very often though; I don't tend to dress up enough.

Is the waste yarn edge on the cuff or the thumb and fingers? It would make more sense to me that it was on the cuff, but if so, that's a completely terrible cast-off of the fingers in the picture on knitty. I mean, there's casting off loosely, and then there's casting off with enough excess yarn to knit another pair.

It's on the thumb. It's knit straight from the bottom to the top, with the thumb stitches knit in waste yarn, then unpicked and picked up and knit seperately.

The cast-off is a feature; it's meant to look like that. If you wanted, you could always do a tighter cast off, though.

The only thing I don't like about the Fetchings is the picot bind off. It may be just the way I knit .. it tends to curl outward. So I lose the prettiness of how it could be to this annoying curled edge. I have seen someone do just a regular bind off for it and I will likely do them that way next time. The latest knitty has 'Guy' fetchings, I believe. They don't have the picot either. Just some advanced warning about what to look for.

Somehow, the picot cast off has managed to work on these.

I think I'll do the 'Dashing' ones next, though.

What I don't get is why you can't just slip the stitches onto a stitch holder?

You have to have live stitches above and below. I don't think that's possible with a stitch holder.. not easily for me anyway :)

I see, in order to leave stitches all the way round for the thumb. I would have guessed to leave some stitches on a holder and then cast on the rest, but this way does make more sense.
