On being vegetarian
Apr. 12th, 2015 02:50 pmFor Lent, I went vegetarian (except for cheese). I expected to return to meat eating, but perhaps only wild game or free range animals. However, when I broke my Lenten fast on a wild hare, it felt wrong. I mean, it was delicious, but eating meat felt like a backward step.
One of my reasons for doing vegetarian had been efficiency of land use, and free range meat doesn't really address that issue. But obviously that's not a problem with wild animals, which don't get in the way of other foraged/wild foods. So where the reaction came from, I'm not sure, but I want to listen to it anyway.
I'm still not going to worry about cheese - I feel that rennet is a byproduct of the dairy industry, and dairy has its own problems, but I'd find cutting it out too difficult. I'm not going to eat fish because I was already concerned about overfishing and the use of slaves in the prawn industry.
I am thinking I might make an exception for oysters, but that's more because oysters are delicious than four any ethical reason. I'm still thinking what to do about the children's meat left overs, and I'm sure there are other practical matters.
