Normal every day stuff
Aug. 10th, 2016 01:01 pmI've been thinking about the normal every day stuff I do. At some point every day, I eat some food, read a book, hopefully play a game if my family are feeling cooperative, do something creative. And I sort of assumed for a long time that sure, everyone does that, and as there are so many options, people wouldn't be reading or playing or making the same thing as me, so unless it was something I particularly wanted to recommend or disrecommend (or wanted to comment because it was a present or a recommendation), it wasn't worth thinking about.
But actually, I then realised that other people assumed that all gamers talk about the games they play, and have a common pool of games to play from, a shared experience - many people read the same books, and I'd noticed that my friends often have that shared experience that I don't necessarily have, simply due to not talking about it - even the making things, like I started needle felting when we went to Portland two years ago, and recently a friend has got enthusiastic but in such a way as indicates that they maybe didn't realise they knew people who did it? Even as simple as what exercise we do, I had often talked to a particular friend about how we liked to go swimming but don't often get the time - and when I snuck in a mile on holiday, they were surprised because what I think of as the minimum reasonable swim, they thought of as the maximum possible, and probably quite hard work.
In short, I don't really talk about myself, even though I feel like I never shut up, and in particular I'm trying to add in a 'state of the ghoti' LJ post one a week or so.
So, yesterday I cooked a green lentil stew with peppers and cayenne and extra cheddar, and served it with rice. It was rather nice even though I'm not normally big on lentils, and I'll probably do similar lentils-in-tomatoes again, although mix up the veg and spice because that's what I do. I ate yoghurt for breakfast, but not in an interesting way - I've recently discovered that adding grated carrot to my morning yoghurt is quite tasty, but I didn't do that yesterday. I was reading Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater., which I hadn't realised was a sequel but was rather fun YA with arrogant hero and fairies. I was mostly working on a a small crochet scarf, my third from this pattern; Judith and I have obnoxious neon ones, and they're great for 'it's a little bit cold' times, so I'm making a tasteful pale blue for a friend in NZ. Colin and I watched the last of season 7 of Bones, and will probably be watching Bones for a while as although the season was annoying us, it picked up towards the end and left a massive cliff hanger (I didn't watch anything while cooking, but if I had it would have been Avatar or possibly Adventure Time), then played a quick but satisfying (and not just because I won) game of On The Cards before satisfying Andreas' game needs with a match-the-pairs game and bedtime.
Is this the kind of thing you're interested in? Is there something else I probably don't mention because I think it will be uninteresting, that you totally wish I'd talk more about?
