More on Shockwave and Ubuntu
Instead of running the Windows version of firefox (which was slow and unstable) I can run the linux version and run shockwave through wine. Walkthrough here.

The weather is more seasonal today. I feel much happier and less sluggish. I feel relevant, as though I am part of this, rather than set apart, as I had done.
I also recieved my new laptop (eventually!). I haven't yet persuaded the trackpad to work, and am relying on the nipple, but we did watch Dangermouse in bed. A fitting celebration for St Joseph's day; there was pizza too.
I'm now looking into alternatives to running Windows firefox; I want plaice to have better functionality than perimadeia, not merely better in places, worse in places. I therefore want flash 9 (got) and shockwave.
Any ideas gratefully recieved (but I've run the windows version before, and it was fine).

Upgrading to Dapper didn't make the internet go - I suspect whoever mentioned Flash 8 may have the right of it. However, I did remember that Neopets has most of the games I'd be likely to want to play anyway. Go have a look, if you like that kind of thing.
