Things in my garden that are not dead.

There wa a big hail storm yesterday- this year has had hail like when Benedict was tiny, and I haven't noticed in recent years.

Half of my baby squash plants appear dead, and the strawberries which had flowers no longer do.

Raspberries, currants all seem still to be OK. The strawberries and Jerusalem artichokes (plus random potato plant) seem ragged but potentially OK.

The angelica seems happy and unbothered.

I think the moral of the story is, plant Scandinavian plants and they'll probably be OK.

Gosh, have we had hail like that before? I don't recall ever experiencing such, but maybe I'm a stoat with no long-term memory.

I don't have documentary evidence, but I remember hail about an inch across, and the feeling that this was normal-for-Cambridge, so I'm going with yes.

I didn't go out in it yesterday though.

The strawberries should be OK. I'm guessing they're getting plenty of water!

My tomato plants have grown about 2ft in the 11 days I was away, but the lettuces and chili plants have been scoffed by something.

The cherries and raspberries are just starting to ripen and the strawberries are getting bigger.

My raspberries are a long way off ripening and I didn't check they fruit survived the storm. Cherries are almost there, though; the children keep noticing one ripe cherry and eating it immediately :)

I just picked a handful in the front garden. In a couple of days, there will be at least 2lb for picking. The back garden rasps are probably a week or so behind.

The cherries will be another week or so.
