I'm confused. Why is it always bad to be away from your family at Christmas? It's a religious festival which is about a birth, and hence has familial significance, but the world isn't going to end just6 because I didn't see my mother.

Actually, this year we did go to family - Jon's family - but that's the first time I've done so since leaving home, and it's never been expected of me before.

Some people just don't think it's that much of a deal. Why does that offend some people?

You did see her really really recently

Yes, but that hasn't been true for all of the seven years or so since I left home, or evejn most of them.

My mother is not too bothered by the fact that I didn't go home for three xmases in a row. She was more bothered by the fact that she'd got it in her head that I'd gone to my bf's parents' instead - which we hadn't - we ignore everyone equally :-)

That sounds familiar. Actually, mine was fine about us going there this year, because she'd come to us on boxing day last year or the year before, which somewhat surprised me.

it just isn't something I'd think of doing by default, leaving my cosy home at the busiest time and striking out for other places, even now I'm not singing in a choir.
