The trick with Phaal (apparently; I'm not insane enough to try myself) is to find a good Tandoori restaurant that emphasises subtlety and complexity of flavour over strength and that doesn't have Phaal on the menu. If specially requested, they'll tend to make one that's very strong, for sure, but where the point of the exercise isn't to prove how macho one is.
