Mmm...cheese

Today I didn't have any cheese for breakfast, but I had a baked potato, half with y fenni and half with somerset brie and crayfish tails. Colin had cheddar, somerset brie and salami on his. Also, I had y fenni and crackers for my afternoon tea.

FWIW, Edam and Gouda were my parents' default bog-standard cheese selection when I was growing up – and my family is as English as they come, to first order. I consider Cheddar fairly default these days, but more because most supermarkets devote several square metres of shelf to it than because of any sense of inherited tradition.

(Curiously, I still have a soft spot for Gouda but find Edam rather unpleasant. I'm fairly sure that when I was a kid I couldn't reliably tell the difference except by shape.)

I've considered them fairly interchangeable, too.

I've not eaten much of either recently; I wonder whether I'd be able to taste the difference now if I did.
