"I'll Stand by You" by the Pretenders just popped into my head while I was making coffee, and immediately I started to cry. Hence the poll. [Poll #383226]

I've screened comments, so if you want to explain why, but don
t want people to see, feel free. Also, if you don't mind your comment being unscreened, say so please.

(I don't mind this being unscreened.)

Massive Attack's "Protection". It's partially the sound of it - it's a sonically lush, comforting, enveloping sound, but it's the lyrics, desolate and romantic:

there's this girl I know, needs some shelter,
she don't believe anyone can help her -
she's doing so much harm, doing so much damage
but you don't want to get involved, you tell her she can manage
now you can't change the way she feels
but you can put your arms around her...

and I've been both the parties here, and I know how that feels, the inability to help and the impossibility of consolation, and for those six minutes or whatever it reminds me of what I wish life was about. It's not about making someone happy as much as it's about salving pain, being someone's shield, or being shielded; for some reason that's a hugely romantic image for me.

Oh, yes. The tone of that song is fantastic in a dark, we're all doomed, way. I'm not sure whether that;'s what they intended or not.

Although I did put in Radiohead's Street Spirit, that's no longer actually true. There is no song that makes me cry any more.

P.S. unscreen this comment if you want to!
