Everything is relative. I had a shit year last year, and this year hasn't been much better, but I'm not an Ethiopian or an Iraqui, I'm not terminally ill, I'm not a 40 year-old geek that still lives with his mum. There's always someone worse off. But we still need the whinge - it's a release, a safety valve, and it can help us to put things back into perspective as long as we don't dwell too long.
