One of the things I've been doing recently is learning photography. I'm getting the hang of a proper camera, and taking a lot of photos and hopefully improving. I've taken a couple of photos I'm really pleased with, and want to share further. Where's a good place for that?

This is what I've thought of: Facebook, but then Colin can't see. Tumblr, but I basically only use tumblr from my phone and that's a bit tricky. Just putting them on public galleries on Google, but I find the permissions hard to get right. Instagram, which seems to be a place for editing photos rather than showing off raw photos?

Any other ideas I didn't think of yet? Or is there a reason I'm just wrong about one of those?

If it's just a couple of photos you're proud of, rather than you want to share your entire output, Dreamwidth will probably do. You can set permissions both for individual photos, and for the posts they're in, using standard Dreamwidth filters.

If you want to host a lot of photos and share them outside DW, I think the answer is probably Flickr. It's not perfect, but it does allow uploading lots of photos, and they can be locked or public, but if they're locked, people have to have Flickr accounts.

Yeah, for ages DW had hosting, but no interface and you had to mess around with email. Now you can upload in the normal way if you go to https://www.dreamwidth.org/file/new

But if you want separate hosting rather than mixed in with DW then Flickr is the best option I know of. The second best option is creating a private Tumblr, and then linking to the photos. I wouldn't do that for anything actually secret, but there's no way for anyone to find the images unless you give them the direct URL. I'm the opposite of you, I never use Tumblr on phone, only desktop, so that might not work for you.

Cool, I hope Flickr turns out to be easy to use. And I'm happy for you to put photos of my face up there, ideally don't connect them to an obviously googlable form of my name.

I use intsagram and it's not really for photo editing. It does have a bunch of fliters people use. However all the pictures have to be square and I hear that it's difficult to upload form proper cameras so it's probably not what you are looking for. More designed for phone snapshots that tell stories then showing off good photos.

Cool - I hope it works well for you. You are not yet appearing when I search for you, but maybe that's a time thing.

I use Flickr too, and it seems that it would be an excellent fit for your needs. There's some aspects of it I like less now than how it used to be (specifically, the mosaiced overview which only shows details when you hover over) but generally it does the job well and moving my portfolio elsewhere would be tedious.

I use Blipfoto for one-a-day with occasional extras photojournalling, and Instagram for posting odd pictures I really like - I don't tend to do much in terms of editing or filtering.

I used to use Flickr more, and am kind of thinking I might get back to it.
